You're looking for a router - it will connect directly to your cable/DSL modem and consequently your desktop and laptop will connect to the router and share the internet nouns through it, and the 2 PCs will also know how to discuss to respectively other to share files. Linksys, Netgear & D-Link are purely a few brands. A wireless router will probably set you rear legs $50-80 or so. Stop by your favorite electronics or bureau store and they'll own a bunch to choose from - even Target/Walmart will own them.
