Answers: intelligent switches are routers
u requirement to configure swithes whreas routers are automatic or configures itself
You didn't term it but you described a switch- One port should vote WAN
it is a switch. the console port is for setting it up and uses a special cable to com 1 serial port on your PC and Hyper terminal to communicate next to the switch.

Assuming it is a Cisco - they are the single ones I enjoy see next to a console port.

They hold to be set up first to work. Not resembling the newer routers that will work straight out of the box.
Put your cable in any number 9 or 1, and adjectives your computer ethernet cable should connect to any port surrounded by between, devout luck.
It's a switch, routers and switches are similar, except you don't call for to configure switches. They switch traffic across networks surrounded by a more simple track, but aren't suitable for adjectives applications.

If memory serves me right: you want to connect the cable modem to a switch using a crossover cable. You can plug it into any of the 8 inputs. A crossover cable is a regular ethernet Cat5 cable, except the middle two wires are switched. You later connect your remaining PCs to any inputs on the switch using regular Cat5 cable.
