Windows XP machines losing or incorrectly map make friends drives?

I work surrounded by a Server 2003 environment near nearly 400 client PCs, and we not long consolidated into a single Server 2003 net environment. However, we are discovering the following issues:

Home drives tend to map incorrectly. As an example, if the home drive map K to \\fileserv\homes\staff\%userna... it will occasionally map to \\fileserv\homes\ instead. Also, the server occasionally will lose map to other make friends shares that are assigned via VB marks.

I hold notice that by tally a map drive through network use to the user's home folder, the issue tend to be in motion away. However, I would similar to to avoid such a scenario if at all possible.
