Networking in an Ethernet-equipped home?

I bought a house to be precise fully ethernet-networked...so deeply, respectively room have Cat5e sockets.when I trace these wires down to the underground room, they are adjectives connected to the "output" section on a 40-port Switch...

So could this possible work:--

Connect my Cable Modem to the input coaxial cable in the underground room...embezzle the ethernet out (the splash that would in general plug right into a single PC) and place that into the "input" on the SWITCH?

This style, will I know how to acquire internet in every room? What almost multiple computers at duplicate time? Does the switch work similar to a Router too? Or will I necessitate to place a separate router somewhere within this setup? What something like a wireless access point?

I know these are abundantly of question, but any and adjectives answers are generosity.

Thanks plentifully.

Answers: No. It will not work as you describe.

You inevitability to enjoy a router or firewall between the switch and your cable modem. They can be purchased for 30-60 dollars.

EDIT:
The "WAN" or "Internet" port on the router is connected to the cable modem. Then, any one of the "LAN" ports on the router are connected to the switch. If the ports are auto sensing or if nearby is an uplink port on the switch, later you can use a commonplace ethernet cable. Otherwise, you might entail a crossover cable to bring in that nouns.
Most cable companies will just supply you 1 i.p. address (maybe 2 if you are lucky). So the first computer to connect to your modem would be on the internet.

You would entail a router hooked up to the switch contained by establish to share the internet to this 40 port switch.
Depends, if its a smart switch/router

smart switch will one and only determine if the row connected is intended for incoming or outgoing traffic.
the problem is... if its a simple switch you will require a dhcp server, very soon this can be something as simple as a cheapo router or as complex as a dhcp server.

IMO go and get urself a cheap linksys router, plug modem into router, router out to the switch, from nearby you should win seperate ip's for respectively contrivance.
yes it will work put your modem correlation contained by to the switch afterwards plug your router to any room.
what it will do delivery modem will distribute the relationship surrounded by to the switch and router will sort it wireless.
worthy luck.
