Predicament : an ancient Gateway E-4200, reconditioned...it's a PIII, 500 MHz, 128 RAM - loaded next to Windows 2000 (been told XP would be too much for this computer) It's currently Dial-up lone.

You can supply a stick of 512MB for just about $25
You can add on a stick of 1 GB for give or take a few $45
You may hold working issues, and if you can make the addition of RAM, do so. But a USB Wi-Fi dongle should be capable of work even on a PIII of that speed lower than Windows 2000. (You probably will not obligation extramural drivers.) Disable your dialup modem after getting the Wi-Fi installed.
