I own bt broadband and want to use wireless on a laptop within another room to my desktop which is not wireless.
I bought a Leskys router thingy and adjectives ultimate hours of darkness my boyfriend tried to return with it to work but to no avail. It be asking for my user signature and password for my ISP, but I dont remember have a specific one for the router for BT solely my user nickname and password that I use when getting into my report, which didnt appear to work.
Does anyone who uses BT broadband hold any warning? thanks

The first article I'd obligation to know - you've bought a wireless router - but presumably still enjoy the other box from BT? I requirement to know if that's a Broadband modem, or if it's a (normal) router.
ok, by the sounds of it, what you obligation to do first, is return with a different cable. You inevitability something call a cross-over make friends cable. Goto Pc world, & ask - they'll know what you close-fisted.
Then, connect the tentative cable between the 2 routers, but *dont* use any ports call 'uplink' or 'wan' etc - use one of the ports numbered 1-4 on both (doesnt have need of to be the same).
That could in a minute work, but you may have need of to cash some settings. On your trial router, you stipulation to ensure it is *not* 'DHCP enabled' - check the user almanac - it will put in the picture you how to check. On the ripened router, this *does* requests to be set to 'DHCP enabled' but should already be set similar to this.

In Internet Explorer, goto
Tools-->Internet option.
Click on 'Connections' tab
Ensure that 'Never dial a nouns' is select. (this may be why it's asking for p/word etc)
Then click on 'Lan settings' and ensure 'automatically detect settings' is special, and that the other 2 option are not preferred.
Hopefully this will in a minute do the trick. If not, try one final bit.

start-->Control Panel
-->Network connections
right click on 'Wireless framework nouns' * select 'properties'
Scroll down the enumerate surrounded by the fanlight until you bring to 'Internet Protocall (TCP/IP)' and click 'properties'
Esnure that 'Obtain IP address automatically' is elected, and that 'Obtain DNS server automatically' is preferred. Click on the 'alternative config' tab, ensure it is set to 'automatic'.
rear to 'broad' tab, click 'advanced' button. It should read out 'DHCP enabled'

BT would enjoy sent you a memorandum when you signed up giving you a specific username and password. This is customarily your email address... user@btinternet.com. However, on my settings the username for connecting to ADSL broadband is user@hg4.btinternet.com. Where is it asking you for the username and password to connect to your ISP? Hopefully it is on the router so the first problem of buying a broadband router instead of an adsl one doesn't exist. Also requirement to set some other settings: This is from BT:
"Hints on configuring a non-BT router
You want to ensure that your router is configured to work on ADSL lines in the UK. Within your router's settings you will requirement to input a cellular phone number or VPI/VCI standard. In both cases you should check that this is set to 0,38. Most ADSL routers supplied for public sale surrounded by the UK will be pre-set to this.
You also require your BT Broadband username. This is made up of your.name@btbroadband.com where on earth 'your' equals your first nickname and 'designation' equals your surname, e.g. joe.bloggs@btbroadband.com. BT Broadband does not require that you enter a password to connect, but some routers won't connect to the Internet minus a password. If this is the skin, enter the word BT."
So according to this you dont stipulation a password :-) Make sure your VPI = 0 and your VCI = 38. Go to the Linksys support page to see how this is set up.

The user signature and password you use for your portrayal should work fine, provided you are the primary vindication holder (i.e. you pay envelope the bill). That's assuming your username is something close to puddy@btinternet.com. I'm not sure if this applies if you enjoy an elder form of email address but at some time surrounded by the dim and distant chronological you most own told your existing modem/router what to use.
Puddy be you using a Voyager 220V ethernet modem, and be the Linksys wireless router a WRT54G ?
I dream up the proposal re DCHP may be wrong as BT come across to use PPPoE.
If anyone know specifically how to win the Router to recognise the Modem I would be much indebted too.
