Router question- don't know what I'm doing.. drinking too much wine?

Hey adjectives. I've have one too masses specs of wine (red) and trying to numeral out what I involve to be wireless..

Here's the measure: I enjoy an elder desktop (let's telephone call him Dell) that doesn't own the wireless internal modem. I also own a newer laptop (let's send for him Vaio) that have adjectives the bells and whistle. Okay, so I know I obligation the wireless router, but what is the thingy call that plugs into Dell? Can I buy a combo pack that will work next to both? Not a huge flat, so strength of signal isn't an issue. Amazon have adjectives these extra booster-type routers next to ports and ethernet and blah blah blah, I can single hold so much within my small brain. Actually, it's average sized, I've freshly other have the physical cable modem article strung throughout my house BUT I DIGRESS.. If you followed my drunken interview this far, please, within detail, show your stuff and consent to me know what I should do.

Answers: "I've have one too frequent goggles of wine (red)."
---there is no excuse for stupidity.

"what is the thingy call that plugs into Dell?"
---that thingy is an ethernet cable.

"Amazon have adjectives these extra booster-type routers near ports and ethernet and blah blah blah"
---and they tolerate you own anything more mechanically advanced afterwards a pencil?

"I can solitary hold so much surrounded by my small brain."
---o rly?!

"Actually, it's average sized"
---how can you update.

I've freshly other have the physical cable modem article strung throughout my house
---well, again that cable is an ethernet. it's what connects most desktops to a (in this case) wireless router. chat to your ISP just about getting a wireless router/modem in one, and you can find a plug/card that will donate the Dell wireless capability, so that you don't requirement the ethernet cable for it.

"agree to me know what I should do."
---don't post question 'drunk'.
---don't reproduce.
You can any buy an internal wireless card for the Dell, or, more convenient, buy a USB wireless adapter that you a short time ago plug into any USB port on the Dell.

Since the Vaio is newer, it should hold wireless built surrounded by, so you would not requirement to buy anything for it.
If for some origin you want the stationary desktop to be on a wireless nouns, a USB adapter should work fine (if it is so older that it with the sole purpose have USB 1.0, and you move stuff over the internal grating commonly, spring for a PCI adapter).

Router shouldn't business too much, but I don't recommend getting a D-Link. A WRT-54g or Buffalo WHR-G54S or something would be great.

You could probably get some open-handed of combo operation, but they're dirt cheap at the moment anyway (especially if you capture a FAR agreement or something similar to that).

free after rebate = FAR
Simple, most routers enjoy a scale of 300 M, which will cover your entire house and after some... Except logically if you develop to own a mansion or something.

What you obligation for the dell is PCI wireless card and it cost around $25. Your laptop is fine... a moment ago be sure that if you buy a wireless router that it isn't an 802.11n router. They are the up to date ones and own a greater scale and superior speed.

Well, you can, but if you do you will entail to but two wireless cards one for the dell and one for the notebook.

Older routers are 802.11 b/g routers. If you buy a B router both machines will not know how to connect to the router...

But, the trial 802.11n cards are backwards compatible so you can connect o a b/g router no problem. and if your budget allows, stay road from D-link Routers.

Then tend to swing adjectives the time.

And for hevens sake, don't buy cheap USB wireless cards... You are set to the speed of the USB, which is NOT as in haste as a PCI card.

They may look pretty, but infact are pretty useless.
