If you also want to be capable of connect both computers to the internet, later you inevitability a router...a wireless router. The router will plug into your internet source (cable/dsl modem). You computers will connect to the router wirelessly.
I bet both of your laptops also enjoy the expertise to be plugged into the router if needed. The plug looks resembling a phone jack, just bigger. You can connect those to the router, if you want, next to standard ethernet cable.
The router will issue your computers IP address. The router will be assigned an IP address by your ISP.
With both computers connected to the router, you'll know how to share files and such between the computers *and* both will know how to communicate on the internet using impossible to tell apart internet source.
