I own an Inventory Management System installed in the department and thru an experience, to know how to consent to the said application to be access remotely, I should hold Windows Server licensed plus a Terminal Server license too which is particularly expensive setup. You could use TightVNC or Remote Desktop. Both of them are free. Remote Desktop is built into Windows.
Now, I wouldn't suggest using them in need them mortal wrapped surrounded by a Virtual Private Network (VPN) because they are inherently insecure.
