Automatic internet connect near ubuntu?

Am i competent to automatically connect to the internet beside ubuntu? and if so, how?

Answers: If I plug my laptop running Ubuntu onto an ethernet web, it picks up an IP address and DNS server details and so on automatically. This can be an ethernet from a works LAN or from my DSL router... so for wired ethernet it picks up the internet automatically.

For dial-up, Linux is more difficult. The modem for my laptop is *not* supported as it's a wierd winmodem that have the driver do most of the work and the driver is proprietary and lone works below Windows. So, mostly activity over for the modem. Some modems are supported (an increasing number as race work out how to drive them) but in that is profusely of work contained by getting them to work.

As far as wifi is concerned... on this laptop, Ubuntu recognised the wifi. Once I set SSID and WEP/WPA key, it connects to a wifi router. So if I turn it on at home it automatically finds itself an IP and DNS info for my wifi router... and is 'on queue' by itself. About partially of wifi adapters are recognised by Ubuntu... Broadcom and Atheros mostly. Unrecognised ones are mostly not useable from Ubuntu.

But here is other ndiswrapper that allows your window drivers to run lower than Linux. I've have big problems near ndiswrapper and a Linksys wifi card... the card have to be removed to allow the PC to shut down or reboot and it's changeable on start up too... sometimes it works, sometimes it hang. So ndiswrapper may work or it may not work, but any means of access within is moderately seriously of setup and fiddling you own to do.
When you insert and run the Ubuntu Live disc, it should automatically detect your internet nouns, close to ethernet / cable-modem / DSL / wireless etc. If it doesn't, you will own to do abundantly more hassle.
