I find that AVG free is the best one for home personal use. If you want more license after can I suggest AVG professional. They don't give the impression of being vastly expensive and work near Vista and XP.
most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a undisruptive browser. you should use a more immobilize browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox next to Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

Go for Norton Internet Security 2008, McAfee Total Protection, BitDefender Internet Security or KasperSky.
They adjectives enjoy great antivirus scanner, firewall and more.
Kaspersky and Bitdefender are the best since they detect pretty much ANYTHING but it's perceptive to use any of them beside spy sweeper. That's a better antispyware.
PC-cillin. I own several computers surrounded by my home and this software covers adjectives for around like price it would cost for Norton for solely 1 computer. It also have spyware protection. Since I've upgraded to wireless, I be competent to hold the program scan day by day at a convenient time when I'm not going to be using the computer.
