My avg free vote's the resident shield is not loaded??
I hold clicked on this but it will not consent to me switch it on
why is this??

its not much accurate lacking the resident shield!
install avg, download the hottest text and reinstall
if that fail, launch system restore and restore your PC to a time when avg worked

You have need of the Resident Sheild to be working. This is the constituent of the program that monitors leisure on your mechanism and as a result would lock in a virus trying to do impair. First I would boot to Safe Mode (Keep drumbeat F8 as the comuter boot) and run a full virus scan. If that doesnt find anything after un-install AV and re-install it.
just uninstall avg..start/control panel/add remove programs/avg...next download it again
