Avast is a biddable Antivirus that you can download for free. You enjoy to register first (for free) and use the code for 12 months. You can Update it again (free) For the subsequent 12 months and again and again.
I recommend Avast than AVG.
I don't know much give or take a few AVG.

For your anti-virus requirements, I would suggest Avira AntiVir(R) PersonalEdition Classic. It have excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate to be precise better than most "paid-for" anti-virus programs and is lighting on using your computer's resources. And did I mention that it's free!

BTW, Avoid the free altered copy of an anti-virus call AVG, it is violently popular, but it have horrible virus detection capibilities.
