Every time I try to run a scan I obtain a homicidal error and my computer shuts down. I enjoy run anti virus etc but still no luck...any accepted wisdom??

Try to uninstall ad-aware and reinstall it and see if that fixs it.
If that does not fix it later try some other anti-spyware programs, spybot is suitable, run that and see if in attendance is any spyware and transport it out, consequently see if ad-aware works.
