My best answer is that any hardware connected to the internet have the potential to be hack into. If you want to be unquestionably sure noone is looking or listen to you is to disconnect the camera (and microphone).
But if you're using a firewall, anti-virus software, and practice "safe and sound computing" technique, the risk is minimal. It's unlikely software like vlc can be used against you unless you've put unsafe settings into it.
Your biggest vulnerability is within have an unknown program (google "wager on orifice") running in the surroundings that you're not aware of. That's why you call for dutiful anti-virus software that can identify spiteful programs.
Its not risk-free, that happen to me, at times i realize the standard lamp be on which method someone be lookin at me! that stoped when i scan my laptop for spywares
If you are not doing anything dodgy or you are not a looked-for personage later at hand is nil to verbs going on for.
I know in attendance be some yahoo activex pattern cam exploit that they have supposedly patched. It is conspicuously possible for an attacker to turn on your network cam and keep under surveillance whateve it have a belief of... I persaonlly don't use them and/or if I do user peripherals resembling nouns mics... I unplug them after I am done as they also can be used to hear communication.
