I believe you're asking for "Safe-Mode" which loads up the minimal set of drivers and does not start unnecessary services. This does not "rub out memory," it simply doesn't nouns things that aren't required.
If you're truly have problems near a system that you feel is compromised by a worm, virus, etc and you cannot verbs it up, it's best to use an external medium to verify it. That vehicle any booting rotten agreed good/clean boot medium and using not dangerous malware cleaning software or by putting the frozen drive contained by another system and checking it as a subsidiary drive. The first risk is best because you won't risk compromising the boot medium, especially if it's a bootable compact disc.
