It be a hobby group that started out sharing accepted wisdom, until someone figure out the be money to be made *cough* Bill Gates.. once he "developed" BASIC he started to turn his spinal column on the club and market his code... specifically the story I've hear. There is more innovation when the info is shared, Xerox PARC shared near Jobs & Gates the GUI and the mouse supposedly... lots of the technology we used be developed contained by an unseal, sharing environment similar to a college and masses of the inventors never get the $$$ of their concept.
Think going on for it, if a 2 compaines are competing to develope duplicate products don't you assume they could both benefit from the others advance & mistakes? It might even hang on to R&D costs down some.
But, what the company can regain in the bazaar is exclusivaty if they are the singular ones selling the product.
