my choice would be avast home edition, its a free anti virus program. you can get hold of it at www.avast.com i own used it for several years and it have other caught any virus that own found their passageway onto my notebook
http:\\www.mcafee.com is the best to use it won't slow down the speed of Computer thoroughly much and it is not a hefty software too
McAfee is not too much unwieldy. Also it doesn't slow the processing speed, if it is regularly updated and scan.
For your anti-virus requirements, I would suggest Avira AntiVir(R) PersonalEdition Classic. It have excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate to be precise better than most "paid-for" anti-virus programs and is restrained on using your computer's resources. And did I mention that it's free!

BTW, Avoid the free edition of an anti-virus call AVG, it is violently popular, but it have horrible virus detection capibilities.
