You can't run a virus scan while using the computer for anything else. It uses too much resources & slows it down to an unsound speed.
2 ways to do it
~manually run the update & scan when you will be away from the computer for awhile, if you remember it
~set the automatic controls to update & afterwards scan at hours of darkness (leaving the computer on, but the monitor off)
I prefer the 2nd means of access. Yes it uses for a time more electricity but automating the chore & getting updates automaticly (anti-virus, Windows, Zone Alarm, etc) is more historic to me

Yes it is better to chose time when you are not using the computer to do scan ( light of day or hours of darkness )

If your computer doesn't enjoy heaps files and softwares, I deem its fine to give up your job it running while you're out at lunch.
If you enjoy 100GB of files, after one dark should suffice.
