What i want to know is what's the difference between Avasts scanner and a fire wall? My on access scanner blocks things coming in. What's the difference? Should my firewall be running at like time as my scanner. My fire wall is comodo.

Yes, firewall should be running in conjunction beside your anti-virus software.
The difference is roughly this:
Anti-virus scanner is looking for virus... it scan files that are on your harddrive, it scan files surrounded by solid time as you belief them and/or execute them.. and when you are downloading them.
A Firewall protects (blocks) ports.
For instance: the port you use to access net sites is port 80, for telnet it is port 23, for ftp port 21/22
here are thousands of these ports which you can guess of as widen tunnels into your computer.
All of these communication "tunnels" or channel could potentially be access inward by an attacker... so your firewall protects these ports.
It will inform you when a program is trying to use a port and if you are not the one executing that program it might be a signal for you to block the program and alert you to a possible attack.
