Me and my friend are making a sword combat video, and we want to put some special effects, approaching ninjas and lighting and stuff.

Answers: You're going to obligation more than Movie Maker to accomplish awfully much.
However, if by "ninjas" you suggest guys who can soar up onto duly illustrious places, you can approximate that by jump down from those spots backwards, and later reversing the video clip (assuming MM have that capability). Only please watch out when doing that if you're holding a sword, even a plastic replica.
When you vote "lighting", shall I assume you be set to "lightNing"? I parsimonious, lighting is not a special effect, it's a requirement for dutiful color rendition contained by the video. Okay, so if you want to enjoy, read aloud, sparks fly sour a sword when it strikes another sword, or a bit of armor, that can be able by touching up one or more frames of video by exporting them as bit map (again assuming MM can do that), and adding up some spark-like streaks (or lightning bolts, etc) to the representation using Paint or some other artwork/drawing program, next import the frame(s) put money on into MM and inserting or replacing the artistic frame(s) within the video timeline.
As beside any clean method, try it on some throwaway video clips first, until you draw from the hang down of it.
