Please suggest an operating system, possibly a Linux distro. I am sympathetic to suggestions.
Answers: Although it can run ubuntu, you should try xubuntu. It'd be capable of run that pretty hasty. And depending on the graphics card, you may know how to run beryl or compiz fusion:

You can also try knoppix, slax, kubuntu, damn small linux, spike linux, puppy linux, Windows 2000, XP.
You could even run Vista ( Probably slow, but conceivably not because of the RAM) on that.
To do this:
Copy the contents of a Vista dvd to your tricky drive.
Then replace the "winsetup.dll" beside this one:

That file will brand name it so Vista doesn't check if your computer is powerful ample to run vista.
Run the setup.exe
And lurk a long time
If your computer doesn't die, you will own Vista
When Vista starts:
Press the window key
Go to run
type "msconfig"
Uncheck every box on every tab
Now it will look approaching window 2000, simply slower
Windows98 running 98-lite.
- this will agree to you use the 95-shell on a 98-system.
Ubuntu
- may be a bit sluggish if when you run it from the compact disc, but once you install it on the HDD it will run fine.
