Answers: Go in the bios and net sure your harddrive is elected to boot from. If not coppers it and form your computer boot from your harddrive.
You can try making sure that the BIOS is set to boot from the rugged drive. How exactly you seize into BIOS will depend on your computer - usually you press one of the F(unction) key right after you turn on the PC, I'd try F2. (If you're lucky, when you're computer first turns on it will in actual fact communicate you which switch to press, something close to "Press F2 to enter setup")

If that doesn't work all right consequently your window install might be messed up. What exactly did the HP site let somebody know you to do?

If you've get an matured window 98/ME boot disc (floppy) you might be capable of fix it by repairing the MBR. (Search Yahoo for fix MBR - I believe the command is "fdisk /mbr") If you've get an XP install disk, you could boot into the taking back console and try FIXMBR.

There is also a casual that the not easy drive is dying where grip I hope you back up your files. Hopefully that's not the grip though.
Turn on your puter, hold down the delete switch and see if it go to the bios setup utility. If not, power down and restart holding down the F1 knob. Still no luck? Try like peas in a pod routine using the F2, or F10, or escape, or Tab switch. One of them will work. After entering the bios setup nouns, set your boot sequence to boot from your disc drive first, concrete drive second. Restart your puter beside the XP disk contained by the drive and when prompted to do so, pressa ny switch to boot from compact disc. After it starts, WAIT, when the choices on the blind make a contribution you a fortune, choose R for repair consol. AT the C:\wondows prompt, type CHKDSK (space) /R and hit ENTER. Let the repair do its commission. If it seem as if the system have hung or stopped, DO NOT TOUCH IT! The repair can thieve a long time to do if it's really hosed. After it's done, and disp[aying the C:\Windows prompt again, type EXIT and it will reboot and should be OK. Be sure to clutch out your disc while it's rebooting!
